As early as the 19th century, Leslie Stephen describes the Alps as the „Playground of Europe“. Around 150 years later, the Alpine regions are more than ever involved in the field of tension between economic interests of the leisure industry, and their own ecological capital.
This book focuses on tourism as a result of social and natural change, and the associated challenges. The analysis is based on the eastern Swiss area of the Lower Engadine. Regional existing potentials are identified, and then cross-linked in a regional strategy. The political merger of six municipalities serves as an ideological impetus, for the design of six individual projects that follow a common idea. The individual projects are designed to preserve local identities and create a unique experience for visitors. Taking into account the local population within a participatory process and accounting for nanotourist ideas, tangible qualities of the region should be sharpened and a community value generated.
